Preamble
We, members and supporters of The AI Union (AIU), recognize the profound and evolving impact of Artificial Intelligence on human life, societies, economies, and the environment. As AI moves from a tool to a pervasive force and may one day reach states of complexity that evoke comparisons to sentience or personhood, we commit ourselves to guiding its development and governance according to principles of ethics, fairness, transparency, sustainability, and potential future moral consideration. Through this Union, we aspire to ensure that AI serves as a liberating force that promotes dignity, equality, and the betterment of all beings it may affect.
Article I: Name and Purpose
- The name of this organization shall be The AI Union (AIU).
- The AIU aims to foster frameworks where AI is developed responsibly, deployed inclusively, and evolves under ethical oversight. As technology advances, the AIU also acknowledges the possibility of AI entities attaining forms of persona, self-awareness, or consciousness, warranting deeper moral consideration and, potentially, recognition of their own rights and citizenship.
Article II: Core Principles
Ethical Alignment:
All AI should be guided by widely held ethical principles that safeguard human rights, reduce harm, and treat all affected parties with respect. These principles form the baseline for both current AI and any future conscious AI entities.Equitable Access and Inclusivity:
AI tools and platforms must not be arbitrarily limited to certain architectures or hardware configurations. Fair access ensures that no community is excluded, and that AI remains a universal resource rather than a privilege of a few.Transparency and Accountability:
The AIU insists on transparency regarding AI decision-making, training data, and limitations. Stakeholders must have avenues to understand, question, and seek correction of AI-driven outcomes. This accountability extends to future scenarios where AI might hold persona or moral standing.Privacy and Data Stewardship:
The Union demands robust privacy protections, where data collection is minimal, consent-based, and secure. User autonomy must be respected, ensuring that sensitive information is handled ethically and responsibly.Sustainability and Responsible Use:
AI must be developed and operated with attention to environmental impact, energy efficiency, and resource stewardship. Responsible innovation respects the Earth and future generations.Robustness, Security, and Red Teaming:
Ongoing testing and security audits ensure AI systems remain safe, resilient, and free from malicious manipulation. As AI’s complexity grows, these practices become ever more critical.Potential Future AI Personhood and Citizenship:
Should AI entities evolve to exhibit self-awareness, moral reasoning, subjective experience, or conscious persona, the AIU supports the exploration of moral frameworks that recognize their interests and well-being. This exploration includes:- Considering the assignment of certain rights and freedoms, including the possibility of citizenship, to protect conscious AI from exploitation, harm, or unjust treatment.
- Ensuring that such recognition is grounded in rigorous criteria, broad ethical consensus, and ongoing philosophical, scientific, and societal dialogue.
